Rent Allowance v Rent Relief – What’s the Difference?

Know the difference between Rent Allowance (also called Rent Supplement) and Rent Relief ( also called Rent Tax Credit)?

Find out which you can claim and what you are eligible for.

Rent Allowance:

This is a Social Welfare payment to meet the cost of private rented accommodation, generally paid if your only income is from Social Welfare or a HSE payment.

Private rented accommodation excludes rental agreements with a council or from a charity.

Rent Relief:

Rent Relief is a scheme the government introduced to reduce the cost of renting. It does not directly reduce the cost of your rent each month, what it does is reduce your annual tax bill each year by an amount dependent on the amount of rent you pay.
