Good News!  As part of the Irish Revenue tax system, Tax Refunds can be claimed if you have been renting in any of the last 4 years.

This can be a whopping €1,560 Rent Tax Refund if you are single, Double that to €3,120 tax back for renting if you are married and these are doubled again if you are over 55

This is available if you have been renting from a private landlord, a landlord who lives abroad, but unfortunately not if you are renting from a parent or from a council or registered charity.

How many years can I reclaim Rent Relief for? Revenue Rent Relief refunds can be claimed for all years back to 2007.

Can I claim Rent Relief if I did not rent for the whole year? Yes you can – and you make be eligible for the full amount of rent relief available.  Rent Relief is availalble at 20% of the total rent paid in the year.  This is subject to a limit depending on your age and marital status - see the Rent Relief Tax Credits Calculation Table on our calculator page.  so if you are single and under 55, spend over €2,000 on rent in 2010, then you will receive the maximum tax credit available of €400 (which is €2,000 at 20%)
